The soil should not be too acidic or too alkaline either. The bed you select should get a minimum of 4 hours sunlight every day.

Selecting the roses

You buy them from any nursery or garden centre. You can get them in containers or as bare root. If you go for bare root roses, then make sure you plant them as soon as possible. Now, the best time to plant roses is either in late winter, early spring or when the ground has softened.

It is good to mulch your roses irrespective of the kind of soil or climate. It helps are lot in very dry areas. Mulching will keep the temperature of soil fairly steady. Besides that, it will also protect the top soil from caking up due to heavy rain. Above all, it helps in weed control.

Your roses with need some care during winter and it will not be difficult to help them through winter safely. You can begin by making a mound with soil around the rose plant base. After that, add some scoops full of mulch over it. This will keep the roses well insulated.

Rose pruning

As you might have heard from people who grow roses in their gardens, there is a lot of satisfaction in pruning your own roses. Pruning helps the flow of sap into younger branches so that they can become stronger.

Most of your roses will not require a lot of pruning. Light pruning will do. The best time to prune is during early spring or late winter, the time when buds are just starting to swell however, prior to their opening fully.
