All the benefits and drawbacks of organic gardening
You can get your vegetables from the supermarket or you can grow them in your backyard. While it is said that love surely adds some unique flavour to food, if we think practically, there is not much truth to this.
Nevertheless, you do know the difference between a supermarket tomato and a home grown one. While the former is devoid of any taste or flavour, the latter is surely far superior when it comes to flavour.
Now, when you think about organically grown tomatoes or any vegetables for that matter, then things are different. While they might not actually taste very different from your own tomato that was grown in your backyard, they do much for your health and for the health of your soil.
Organic gardening is much more than simply using natural products and natural methods in gardening. It goes deeper than that. It involves understanding the importance of soil and other natural resources and understanding our duty towards protecting them.
It goes beyond the present planting season; it thinks about the coming several planting seasons. Organic gardening involves the use of natural products over synthetic or artificial products.
Instead of applying some quick fix sort of a chemical fertiliser in order to improve soil fertility, you apply manure or compost that will nourish the soil and enhance its nutritive value.
Now, because you are not using any chemicals in your soil, the soil does not pass any to the plant. As a result, the food that you get is free from any harmful chemicals. Besides that, you do not even use any herbicides or pesticides.
Weeds are prevented from growing by using natural methods. Plants are placed close to each other so that the soil does not get enough sun to allow any weed germination, let alone any growth.
Pests are controlled by way of crop rotation and other natural methods. In other words, any use of chemicals is avoided as far as possible. This keeps the soil healthy and prevents any damage from the chemicals.
Besides the soil, the other natural resources such as water and air are also kept from being contaminated.
While there might not be any evident difference between organically produced vegetables and fruits and others that are grown conventionally, the main point is sustainability.
Conventional techniques work for a short period and end up damaging and eventually destroying the soil. On the other hand, organic techniques go a long way into enhancing and improving the quality of the soil.
Thus, the nutritious and succulent organic tomato is good not only for your health but also for the health of your soil.
