Gardening enables us to care and nurture for things that depend on us to survive. At the same time it puts us in tune with nature, gives us a reason to get outdoors, and allows us to form special bonds with beauty from our natural friends. But when it comes to a gardener and his/her rose, such a bond goes beyond the norm, as his/her rose is a direct expression of himself.

The American culture has deep-seated roots when it comes to growing roses. It has both cultural and symbolic significance. It's a symbol of beauty, and we will pay ridiculous amounts of cash for a single, perfect rose. Or, if the occasion calls for it, we will splurge for a whole bouquet, like on Valentine's Day, or weddings, funerals, horse races, etc.

It not only symbolizes beauty but inspires romance. Other countries as well have celebrated the rose, like ancient China, where it also symbolized romance. In British history it's impact is seen everywhere, even in events, such as the long "War of the Roses". It was in the late 1700s before Europe was introduced to the cultivated style of rose, which came to them from China.

Along with their beauty is their lovely fragrance, which is added to perfumes all over the world. Their shape is unique, and their total package is what drives us to an addictive cultivating of these extravagant gifts of gardening.

Shakespeare's plays involved the rose, and the Kentucky Derby which is known as the most exciting two minutes in sports, is called "The run for the roses", where a wreath of beautiful roses is placed around the winning horse neck.

One of the important reasons for rose gardening addiction, is the variety of beautiful colors that they come in. They can be used in so many ways for decoration and celebration. Certain colors also symbolize certain attributes. Like a pink rose says 'gratitude', while a yellow rose says 'joy'. Red, we know, says 'love'.

Their variations in color and style are why rose gardens are so popular, and why rose gardeners get addicted to growing them. They can enhance a yard or a public fountain, as well as community buildings and storefronts.

Rose hips and rose petals are used in some medicinal herbal remedies. And any gardener can tell you that the satisfaction of winning a rose contest is a thrill you never forget.

One of the important reasons for rose gardening addiction, is their flexibility when growing them. They look fantastic whether in bush form or grown in a more free style. The soil needed is not too much of a bother to care for, and they are an all-around good adapter.

The are numerous reasons for rose gardening addiction, and there is a multitude of rose gardeners who have it. They have history, culture, beauty, variety, and limitless applications.
