Painting a wall
Painting a brick wall requires a lot of preparation, you cannot simply paint it with masonry paint!

This wall has been painted previously in places as it used to be the inside wall of a garden shed, now that the shed has been demolished you can see the paint on the wall.
If you were to paint over this wall with standard masonry paint, it would not last very long at all before the paint starts to flake off. Before painting a wall like this it is advisable to paint the wall with a stabilising solution, there are several proprietary brands of stabilising solution made for this purpose-
-
Everbuild stabilising solution
-
Blackfriar stabilising solution
-
Wickes Exterior stabilising solution
-
Johnstones stabilising solution
-
Sandtex stabilising solution

Scrape off any loose bits of paint using a scraper and then apply a coat of stabilising solution to the surface, this will penetrate into the bricks and give a suitable surface to paint onto. You can then apply the masonry paint, normally two coats of masonry paint will be required.
