Home Tiling re grouting tiles

re grouting tiles

How to re-grout tiles.

After a few years the grout between your tiles will often become discoloured. Tiles in damp environments such as bathrooms and kitchens are really susceptible to mould and grout discolouration. If a mould resistant grout such as one containing microban was used then the chances are that the grout will look as good as new for a long time, but for most people it means either whitening the grout or removing it and re-grouting.

grout-remover A grout remover like this is available and will only cost a few dollars, but it is not the easiest job in the world doing it this way!

You can now hire grout removal tools such as the fein multimaster or you could buy one, the cheaper Bosch version- the Bosch PMF-180E multi purpose saw can often be picked up in the sales.

Once you have removed the grout you can then re-grout the tiles. Choose your grout very carefully and never be tempted to buy the ready mixed stuff as it is often difficult to use and it is extremely difficult to get good results!
bal BAL Microflex is a good choice of grout for most applications and can be picked up at most good tile shops.
To apply the grout you will need a squeegee. The basic rule of thumb here is that the larger the squeegee the faster you finish the job!

Mix the grout according to the manufacturers recommendations and ensure that you have the correct type of grout, so if you are grouting a tiled floor that is wooden underneath you require a flexible grout etc.
Spread the grout all over the tiles with the squeegee ans ensure that it gets pressed into all of the gaps firmly. Make sure you remove any excess as you go along with the squeegee. When the grout has a to stiffen slightly you can then put a nice edge on the grout using a piece of plastic tubing by drawing it along the grout lines. Allow the grout to harden slightly and then polish the tiles to remove any grout from the tiles, before it becomes impossible to remove!
Please note that some tiles require sealing before they are grouted such as marble tiles!
